As more and more people get vaccinated, it will soon be time to get back outdoors and safely explore and enjoy the world again. But when Mother Nature is in a bad mood (more likely than ever these days due to climate change), it helps to keep an eye on what’s going on in the sky.
One of the most important tools is the mobile weather app. A good weather app can help you decide if you need to bring an umbrella to work, or prepare for something more severe. With severe weather across the country, especially hurricanes threatening coastal states, it’s best to check forecasts or radar for what’s to come. The Weather app lets you do this on the go.
When testing a weather app, we spend most of our time evaluating the effectiveness of its design. The ideal weather app is visually pleasing and easy to use. If you have to go through multiple screens to figure out when it’s going to rain, the app is off to a bad start.
What we’re not looking for is whether the forecasted weather will pass. We do it for two reasons: First, most of the data for most weather apps comes from the National Weather Service. Some have also pulled their forecasts from AccuWeather, Dark Sky or NOAA. Weather Channel and a few other companies have their own forecasting models, but many applications are just shells for the data flowing in.
Second, and more importantly, to truly determine the accuracy of the service model, we must conduct exhaustive testing on a global scale. We are simply not ready for this challenge. For now, let’s assume that if a company invests the time and effort to create its own predictive models for complex things like weather, it probably knows more about meteorology than we do.
For what it’s worth, these apps were all pretty accurate during testing. Despite earlier conspiracies, the rollout of 5G wireless networks shouldn’t spoil these weather forecasts. Plus, right now you should stay indoors anyway to help curb the ongoing epidemic, even on the best of times.
If you’re really concerned about accuracy, consider having your own weather station. Even though a weather station is more about recording local data than getting forecasts, building and maintaining a weather station is an interesting science project—probably not before a hurricane hits.
At first, we didn’t fully understand the large number of weather apps available for Android and iOS devices. In the end, we picked the apps we thought could offer unique features and the most popular ones. The vast majority of these apps are free, so try them out until you find the one that works best for you.
